Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 12 oz penne pasta
  • 2 tbsp olive oil extra virgin for more flavor
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes preferably fire-roasted
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream for creaminess
  • 0.5 tsp red pepper flakes adjust to taste
  • 0.5 tsp salt or to taste
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper freshly ground is best
  • 0.5 cup parmesan cheese, grated plus more for serving

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Start by boiling a pot of salted water and cook the penne pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, reserving a little pasta water.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute, being careful not to burn it.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  • Add the heavy cream, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper to the sauce. Mix well and let it simmer for another 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Finally, add the cooked penne to the sauce, tossing to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of reserved pasta water. Mix in the grated parmesan until well combined.
  • Serve the creamy penne arrabbiata hot, garnished with extra parmesan and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes if desired.

Notes

Feel free to adjust the spice level by adding more or less red pepper flakes. This dish pairs wonderfully with a side salad or some crusty bread!
